Sustainability

Our environmental improvement initiatives consist of an ongoing process and are a natural part of our business, whether monitoring input materials such as chemicals, yarns and foils – or taking measures to reduce waste material, inefficiencies or energy consumption. Svensson Markspelle offers a wide range of environmentally-labelled items, wool furniture fabrics and curtains made from organic cotton and linen. All products in our range meet Oeko-Tex® standards.

A proactive approach to sustainability issues
The textile industry has no standard approach to handling sustainability issues. This issue arose for us in the mid-1990s, but environmental issues have long been part of our business. Today, this issue has changed and although Svensson Markspelle is still based in the town where the business began, our responsibilities have taken on an increasingly global perspective. Our environmental work adopts a proactive approach, which means we take action beyond what the law requires. We have chosen to describe our environmental work, including some of these preventive actions. Examples of this include our historical soil inventory initiative and the environmental labelling systems that we use. It is important to us that our community and our stakeholders know how we work.

We believe in cooperation
We strengthen our know-how by participating in various environmental forums. We are a member of the Environment and Energy Group, a cooperation group including several members of the trade organisation TEKO which represents Sweden's textile and fashion companies, and since the 1970s we have worked with various environmental issues in consultation with Västra Götaland County Administrative Board.

Our environmental standards
Svenson Markspelles´s business requires a license to operate. Each year our environmental report describes how the business has complied with the requirements and code of conduct of the Swedish Environmental Code and with the terms of our license. Our self-monitoring and associated control programme are part of our operating systems, which include documented procedures on how and what should be measured, monitored and followed up in accordance with our operating license. Every three years a periodical survey of our control programme is conducted by a third party together with the County Administrative Board and Mark Municipality.
